La créatine est un dérivé d’acide aminé présent principalement dans les muscles, elle est impliquée dans l’activité musculaire. Par ailleurs, on trouve la créatine en grande quantité dans les viandes rouges, mais le corps en synthétise lui aussi à partir de la méthionine, de l’arginine et de la glycine. 

Une supplémentation en créatine aurait quant à elle des effets bénéfiques sur la masse musculaire et la puissance (1).

Rôle de la créatine au niveau musculaire

La créatine sert à fournir de l’énergie pendant un effort intense. Elle est transformée et stockée dans les muscles sous forme de créatine phosphate. 

Lors d’un effort de haute intensité, le muscle a besoin d’énergie qui provient de l’ATP (Adénosine Triphosphate). La créatine phosphate régénère cette énergie.

Ainsi, la forme de stockage de la créatine (créatine phosphate) peut fournir de l’énergie pendant une trentaine de secondes. Cela correspond à un effort intense de courte durée. Ensuite, c’est une autre source d’énergie qui prend le relais pour prolonger l’effort.

Par ailleurs, selon les études la créatine a la propriété d’augmenter la force musculaire en fonction du type d’effort et de l’individu. 

Qui est-ce que ça concerne ?

Le but d’une supplémentation en créatine est de saturer le stock de créatine phosphate dans le muscle. Ainsi les sportifs qui cherchent à se supplémenter auraient plus d’énergie (ATP) disponible pour alimenter le muscle lors de l’effort. 

Une supplémentation en créatine semble efficace dans les sports où l’effort est bref, intense et répété (musculation, CrossFit, haltérophilie, sprint, etc.).
