Cette année, la Journée internationale du poulpe est célébrée le 8 octobre 2023. Cette occasion a pour rôle de sensibiliser le public à l’importance de la conservation de leur habitat naturel.

Le poulpe, cet animal extradordinaire

Les poulpes sont des animaux marins qui appartiennent à la famille des céphalopodes. Ils sont connus pour leur intelligence. En effet, ils possèdent 9 cerveaux, 8 bras, 3 cœurs et 500 millions de neurones… ces chiffres vertigineux expliquent également leur grande sensibilité, ainsi que leur capacité à changer de couleur pour se camoufler grâce au millions de cellules colorées qui les recouvrent. Malheureusement, les poulpes sont souvent victimes de la surpêche à large échelle qui détruit leur habitat naturel.

La plupart des poulpes sont sédentaires, solitaires et s’abritent dans des terriers. Carnivores, ils se nourrissent de crustacés comme les crabes et les crevettes qui sont leurs proies favorites. Leur menu comporte aussi des mollusques bivalves et parfois des poissons qu’ils chassent souvent la nuit.

Pourquoi célébrer la journée internationale du poulpe ?

Cette journée est l’occasion de rappeler l’importance de protéger ces animaux fascinants et de préserver leur environnement. Pour cela certains gestes à notre échelle peuvent préserver cette étonnante créature :

  • Ne pas acheter de poulpe frais entre mars et novembre : c’est la période de ponte et de reproduction des poulpes. On évitera d’en consommer sur cette période.
  • Vérifier la zone de provenance : on opte pour certaines zones de pêches ! Ce guide de WWF recense les meilleures zones de pêche, selon les méthodes utilisées. La pêche en chalut est à proscrire pour préserver l’habitat du poulpe, ainsi que la faune marine qui y vit et le nourrit !
  • Varier les espèces consommées en choisissant des alternatives au poulpe : la seiche et le calamar sont des options saines. Attention à ne pas abuser des fritures !
  • Choisir des modes de cuisson éthiques : le poulpe étant un animal particulièrement intelligent et sensible, il est cruel de le couper et de l’ébouillanter vivant. ll serait préférable de placer le poulpe vivant au congélateur, dont le froid l’anesthésie progressivement, sans qu’il en souffre.

En cette journée internationale festive, célébrons les particularités fantastiques du poulpe ! Aussi improbable que cela puisse paraître, il est possible de savoir à quoi « rêvent » les poulpes ! Et pourtant, ce surprenant animal marin peut changer de couleur selon la phase de son sommeil. Lors de la phase passive, la plus longue, il reste immobile avec une couleur pâle. Quand survient le sommeil actif, le poulpe va changer de couleur et se contracter. « On peut presque narrer les changements de son corps, imaginer son rêve », ose David Sheel, professeur de biologie marine à l’Université pacifique d’Alaska, cité par Futura Sciences.
